Super Eagles and the broader football community have expressed deep sympathy for captain Wilfred Ndidi following the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who was killed in a road accident in Delta State earlier this week.
Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, was involved in a traffic collision in Umunede and later died after being rushed to a hospital in Agbor, officials said.
In a message shared on the national team’s official social media account, the Super Eagles conveyed their support to their midfielder during a difficult time.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time, Wilfred,” the statement read.
Ndidi’s club side, Turkish giants Besiktas, also released a condolence statement on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, describing the death as tragic and offering prayers for the bereaved family.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident,” the club said. “May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”
Ndidi recently captained Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he also scored his first international goal, which he dedicated to his father’s influence and support.
