National Agency for the Prohibition (NAPTIP) has requested concrete evidence following online calls to investigate singer Simi and her mother’s former daycare over resurfaced social media posts from over a decade ago.
The posts, dating back to 2012 and 2013 when Simi was 24 and assisting at the facility while pursuing her music career, have been interpreted by some netizens as sexualising toddlers, triggering fresh accusations of misconduct.
In a statement issued Tuesday, NAPTIP urged anyone with verifiable information to come forward. “We kindly request anyone with factual information, evidence, direct knowledge, or who was personally affected by the matters referenced in the viral posts or related experiences to kindly reach out to us confidentially,” the agency said, providing its official email and direct messaging channels.
Simi responded swiftly on X, rejecting any suggestion of wrongdoing and framing the tweets as innocent observations from her everyday life at the time.
“In 2012, I lived and helped out at my mom’s daycare while I was hustling my music. I tweeted everything that happened in my life, as we all did at the time,” she wrote.
“Kids can be mischievous. If a child did something I found funny, I tweeted about it. Kids are cute and lovable. I want to hug, kiss and cuddle them. I tweet about it. Nothing I tweeted was from perversion.”
She added: “I’ve never been depraved in my life… I wasn’t trying to hide it, because I don’t have anything to hide.”
The controversy erupted after Simi publicly criticised a TikTok user for making a false rape allegation against her, prompting critics to dig up the old posts in retaliation.
As of Tuesday evening, neither Simi’s management nor the daycare — which is no longer operational — had issued further statements. NAPTIP has given no indication of launching a formal probe, stressing it will act only on credible evidence.
