Sen Natasha Condemns ‘Disturbing’ Plot to Kill Obi, Odigie-Oyegun

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has strongly condemned the reported assassination attempt on former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, describing the development as “deeply disturbing” and incompatible with democratic norms.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the senator said political rivalry must never degenerate into violence or intimidation.

“This development is deeply disturbing and has no place in our democracy,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said. “Politics must never descend into violence, intimidation, or threats against perceived opponents.”

The lawmaker expressed concern over what she described as “overzealous political actors” who, in their bid to impress political leaders, allegedly resort to harassment or attacks against opposition figures.

“I am particularly concerned about overzealous political actors who, in a bid to impress or show loyalty to Mr. President or any other leader, take it upon themselves to harass or attack members of the opposition,” she said. “Such actions are reckless, counterproductive, and dangerous to our national unity.”

The reported attack in Edo State has heightened tensions amid growing political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpoti-Uduaghan stressed that democracy depends on free political participation and the protection of dissenting voices.

“Democracy thrives on healthy competition, free expression, and the protection of dissenting voices,” she said. “The opposition has every constitutional right to organise, mobilise, and carry out political activities without fear. Attempts to silence or endanger them undermine the very foundation of our democratic system.”

She called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure accountability for those found culpable.

“I call on security agencies to thoroughly investigate this incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” the senator added. “Nigeria must remain a nation where political differences are resolved through dialogue and the ballot, not through violence.”

Reaffirming her position, the senator said she remained committed to defending democratic principles and the rule of law.

“As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I remain committed to defending democratic principles, the rule of law, and the safety of all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation,” she said.

Security authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive report on the incident, as political stakeholders continue to react to the alleged attack.
