Senate President Godswill Akpabio has given firm legislative backing to the creation of ‘Anioma State’, confirming that Asaba will serve as its capital once the new state is carved out of Delta State.
Akpabio made the announcement on Wednesday while addressing the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress in Asaba. He said the proposal, championed by Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North, ranks among the priorities of the 10th Senate and enjoys the full support of the Bola Tinubu administration.
“Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” Akpabio stated.
He added that the restructuring would split Delta into two viable entities and promote decentralisation. “This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities,” he said.
Akpabio noted that Warri would become the capital of the remaining Delta State, citing its existing infrastructure including an airport, government offices, major oil companies, a seaport and a stadium.
The agitation for Anioma State has long been rooted in demands for equity, administrative efficiency and balanced regional development, he said. In November 2025, Nwoko reported that 97 senators had signed a document endorsing the move.
Akpabio urged stakeholders in the South-South zone to back the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying it would foster sustainable growth and national integration. Governors from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River attended the congress.
