ADC, NNPP, PDP Move to Unite Behind Single Candidate for 2027 Presidential Race

Major Nigerian opposition parties have resolved to field a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, marking a significant push towards unity against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The decision was adopted on Saturday at a national summit of opposition leaders held at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde hosted the gathering.6a59fb

Leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and other opposition groups attended the summit themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy.”

Organisers described the meeting as a “strategic response” to Nigeria’s deepening socio-economic and security crises, stressing the need for coordinated political action.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar confirmed his participation, stating: “I have just arrived in Ibadan, Oyo State, for the National Summit of all opposition parties.”

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso also signalled strong support, expressing readiness for “meaningful discussions with fellow national leaders.” Other prominent attendees included former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

The summit focused on building a unified opposition framework, strengthening inter-party cooperation and mapping out a common strategy capable of challenging the status quo in 2027.

The resolution to present one presidential candidate represents the most concrete step yet towards forming a broad opposition coalition, following years of fragmented efforts that many analysts believe contributed to the APC’s victories in 2015, 2019 and 2023.
