Eze Sends Arsenal Back To Top As City Fight Back To Reach 4th Straight FA Cup Final

A thunderous Eberechi Eze strike sent Arsenal back to the summit of the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, while across London at Wembley, Manchester City reached a record fourth successive FA Cup final by coming from behind to beat Championship side Southampton 2-1 in a breathless semi-final.

Eze Delivers When It Matters

The breakthrough at the Emirates came inside the ninth minute, when a sharp combination between Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz worked the ball to Eze on the edge of the box, and the Englishman fired a powerful shot into the top corner to give Arsenal the lead. The goal drew an eruption from a crowd acutely aware of the stakes.

Newcastle did push back, and twice came close to equalising — William Osula spurning an early chance and Yoane Wissa going close late — but the Magpies failed to register a single shot on target in the second half, and Arsenal held on to go three points clear at the top.

The victory was all the more precious given the backdrop of the title race. Before kick-off, Arteta had rallied his squad with a clear message.

“We can talk all day, but we need to go on that pitch and we need to get the job done,” the Arsenal manager told Sky Sports.

He had called the five-game run-in a “new league,” and told reporters his players emerged from the previous week’s defeat to City more galvanised than shaken — saying he “could sense that they were even more convinced than before the game that we’re going to do it.”

Forward Gabriel Martinelli echoed that resolve. “We know how to get there, we want to win the title and put our names in the history of the club,” Martinelli said, recalling Arteta’s dressing room message after the City defeat.

The win moves Arsenal three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table, with the Gunners having played one more game than their title rivals. Newcastle, meanwhile, slipped to a fifth consecutive defeat across all competitions and sit 14th.

At Wembley, Manchester City’s bid for a domestic treble appeared in jeopardy when Southampton, the Championship outfit on a remarkable 20-game unbeaten run, stunned the favourites with a late opener.

Finn Azaz broke the deadlock in the 79th minute with a brilliant individual finish past James Trafford, sending the massed Southampton fans inside Wembley into delirium.

City’s response was immediate and clinical. Jeremy Doku levelled four minutes later when his speculative effort took a wicked deflection to beat Southampton goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, before Nico Gonzalez sealed the comeback with a stunning strike from 30 yards out in the 87th minute.

Guardiola’s side had been in near-perfect form coming into the fixture, recording eight wins and two draws in their recent matches — fuelled by a League Cup final win over Arsenal, a league victory over the Gunners, and a midweek triumph at Burnley to go top of the Premier League.

With the win, City close in on an unprecedented domestic treble, and will face either Chelsea or Leeds United in the FA Cup final next month.

A Title Race With Everything Still to Play For

Saturday’s results sharpen one of English football’s most gripping title battles in years. Arsenal lead by three points but have played a game more than City, whose match in hand ensures the race remains finely balanced. If both sides win all their remaining matches, goal difference would be the first tiebreaker — adding another layer of pressure to every fixture between now and the season’s close.
