Skitmaker and political satirist Kevin Chinedu, better known as Governor Amuneke, has declined his appointment as a youth ambassador for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing restrictions that would limit his freedom to criticise the electoral body.
Amuneke disclosed the development in a video posted on his X handle, explaining that the offer initially filled him with pride as a national honour.
“Reports came to me that I was going to be appointed as INEC Youth Ambassador. I have never felt as proud of myself when I got that message,” he said.
The role was meant to engage young Nigerians on civic responsibilities such as voter registration and participation in elections.
However, his excitement turned to disappointment after he sought clarification on whether he could continue his signature brand of political satire.
“I asked a simple question. I said, ‘Am I going to still be able to criticise INEC if I’m appointed?’” he recounted.
According to Amuneke, the response was clear: while he could promote voter education, direct criticism of INEC would not be permitted.
“They told me they have seen the type of content I do. All of that can still go on. As a matter of fact, I can even preach about getting PVCs and all of that. However, I cannot criticise directly INEC,” he quoted them as saying.
He added: “The moment I heard that, what seemed like congratulations disappeared. I wish it did not come with certain conditions to box my voice.”
Amuneke stressed that his passion for creating critical content is deeply rooted in the struggles of ordinary Africans.
“My passion is rooted in so many things. First, tears of millions of Africans. Second, messages I get from different parts of Africa about governance. Thirdly, my background where I came from and what I have seen,” he explained.
He urged fellow content creators to protect their voices and not compromise for opportunities.
“If you have a platform today and you do not compromise, always remember there are millions of people whose hope is on that voice. That voice is not just yours,” Amuneke said.
The skitmaker thanked the person who recommended him for the role but maintained he remains open to collaborations that do not restrict his content.
