For years, the Aguata Local Government Area enjoyed relative peace and stability in the selection of its Local Government Chairman. This balance was sustained through an unwritten gentleman’s agreement between Aguata North and Aguata South — a simple but respected understanding that allowed each zone to occupy the Chairmanship position for eight years before power rotated to the other zone for another eight years.
However, as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections, this longstanding tradition of equity and mutual respect appears to have been disrupted. Many observers attribute the development to the political manoeuvrings of the incumbent Chairman, Chibueze Ofobuike, whose alleged actions may have cost Aguata South the opportunity to complete its expected tenure in office.
His Excellency, Governor Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, OFR, had clearly stated that individuals who previously served as Caretaker Committee Chairmen or elected Chairmen would not be eligible to contest the forthcoming Local Government elections. Following this directive, it is alleged that Chibueze Ofobuike, faced with the reality of his political limitations, chose to prioritise personal ambition over the collective interest of Aguata South.
Political stakeholders argue that the Chairmanship position remained within the reach of Aguata South had the incumbent Chairman rallied support for the zone and defended its turn in the existing power-sharing arrangement Instead, allegations suggest that he strategically worked to frustrate the emergence of viable aspirants from Aguata South by preventing interested contenders from accessing the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.
In what many describe as a calculated political arrangement, his Deputy Chairman — reportedly from Ekwulobia in Aguata North — allegedly emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), effectively ending Aguata South’s hopes of completing its tenure in the Chairmanship position.
Critics further contend that the broader political objective behind the move is to weaken potential opposition ahead of the contest for the House of Representatives seat in Aguata Federal Constituency, while positioning the incumbent Chairman favourably for his own future political aspirations.
This development has sparked conversations across Aguata, with many residents questioning whether personal ambition should outweigh collective interest and long-standing political understanding. For many in Aguata South, the issue goes beyond politics; it touches on trust, equity, and the moral responsibility of leadership.
A true leader is expected to place the interests of his people above personal advancement. Any political strategy perceived to sacrifice the collective rights of a zone for individual ambition naturally raises concerns among stakeholders and the electorate.
It is important to note that the contest for the House of Representatives seat in Aguata Federal Constituency remains open to aspirants from both Aguata North and Aguata South. The democratic process will ultimately provide the people with the opportunity to decide who best represents their interests.
