Anambra Communities Resolve 40 Years Boundary Dispute

Lasting peace has finally returned to Eboitenani Umuoji and Mgbachu Nkpor communities in Idemili North Local Government Area following the successful resolution of a boundary dispute that lingered for nearly four decades.

Angel Network News (ANN) gathered that the Chairman of Eboitenani Umuoji, Chief Hon. Sir Chijioke Orakwue, and the Odu Nkata Ukwu of Mgbachu Nkpor, Chief Onwukwe, in a show of commitment to peace and reconciliation, accepted and agreed to abide by the 1987 Consent Judgment, which affirmed ownership of the disputed Okofia land by Umuoji community.

The reconciliation came after four years of sustained mediation and technical engagements spearheaded by the Anambra State Boundary Committee under the leadership of the Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Committee, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim.

The dispute, which bordered on the alleged encroachment on Umuoji Okofia land, had over the years generated tension between the neighbouring communities before the intervention of the State Boundary Committee.

A major milestone in the peace process was achieved recently following a series of mediation meetings facilitated by the committee’s technical team to promote dialogue, understanding, and peaceful compromise between both parties.

The peace accord was further strengthened during another meeting held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the Old Government House, Awka, where representatives of both communities jointly presented and ratified a Memorandum of Understanding before the technical team of the Anambra State Boundary Committee.

Receiving the Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the Chairman of the Committee, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Boundary Matters, Okoye Bethel Ekenechukwu , commended both communities for embracing peace and prioritizing harmonious coexistence.

Okoye reiterated the commitment of the administration of Chukwuma Charles Soludo and Deputy Governor OnyekaChukwu Ibezim to resolving boundary disputes across the state and strengthening peaceful relations among neighbouring communities.

Also present at the historic event were the Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Boundary Committee, Dr. Olisa Eloka Mba, and the Committee’s Project Surveyor, Mrs. Oluchukwu Uzochukwu.

The signing and presentation of the Memorandum of Understanding marked a significant milestone in the history of both communities, symbolising reconciliation, mutual respect, and the triumph of dialogue over conflict.
