Peter Obi Calls for Unity, Tolerance After Disputed NDC Primaries

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), urges party members who lost out in recent primaries to accept the process and prioritise unity.

In a speech to aggrieved aspirants and supporters on Wednesday, Obi appealed for tolerance and sacrifice, acknowledging the challenges facing the relatively new party.

“For the party; mine is to most sincerely join and continue to appeal for sacrifice. If you consider that this party is about 90 days old and within these 90 days, we have gone through convention, through primary to another special convention like this. It is not easy,” he said.

“Please, I am begging all of us to be able to be more tolerant, understanding, and sacrifice as we go through this. It is important that we look at tomorrow, let’s not be preoccupied by the process of today, let us look at tomorrow,” Obi added.

He further emphasised party supremacy, saying: “When we are opportune to form government, we will show that party is supreme, that party is in control and we have a sense of accommodation for those of you.”

Critics have described the position as hypocritical, noting that Obi built much of his political brand on rejecting “flawed” and non-transparent electoral processes.

The backlash highlights ongoing tensions within the opposition as different parties position themselves for the 2027 presidential election.
