# The Anambra State Government has urged residents, especially young people and women, to embrace environmental sustainability as a pathway to economic empowerment and wealth creation.
The call was made during the 2026 World Environment Day celebration held at the Dora Akunyili Centre, Awka, with the theme, “Urbanization and Climate Change: Building Resilient Cities for a Sustainable Future.”
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, said Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is committed to building a clean, green, and sustainable Anambra.
He explained that the state’s green enterprise and circular economy initiative encourages citizens to convert waste into wealth through recycling, renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, and other environmentally friendly businesses, adding that environmental protection should be seen as an investment that creates jobs, reduces pollution, and strengthens the economy.
# The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra State Chapter, and the Anambra State Football Association (AnSFA) have resolved their longstanding differences and pledged to work together to advance football and sports development in the state.
The resolution was reached during a crucial meeting held in Awka between the leadership of both organizations.
The SWAN delegation was led by its Chairman, Chimezie Anaso, while the Anambra FA team was headed by its Chairman, Chikelue Iloenyosi.
The meeting marked the end of a disagreement that had strained relations between the two bodies for more than two years.
After over two hours of discussions, both parties agreed to put the dispute behind them and embrace a collaborative relationship aimed at promoting football and sports journalism in Anambra State.
# The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. (Mrs.) Nonye Soludo, said her NGO, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, will collaborate with the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) to strengthen HIV awareness, testing, and response efforts in the state.
Dr. Nonye Soludo stated this when a delegation from ANSACA paid her an advocacy visit, noting that Anambra’s current HIV prevalence rate calls for urgent and coordinated action, with the state now ranked fifth in the country among sub-national entities with the highest number of people living with HIV.
Addressing the team, the First Lady expressed confidence in ANSACA’s capacity to drive HIV prevention, control, and public education initiatives across the state.
She commended the agency’s efforts so far and expressed optimism that sustained interventions would significantly reduce the state’s HIV burden within the shortest possible time.
She also directed the immediate inclusion of ten women living with HIV in her NGO’s upcoming empowerment programme and reaffirmed her willingness to partner with ANSACA to curb the spread of HIV in Anambra State.
# Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Esther Chinyere Onyekesi has wept over the sexual molestation and exploitation of a teenager, Okafor Miraclechukwu Kasiemobi in Nawfia
The teenager, who was severely raped by these men including her guardian, is now two months pregnant according to medical report presented by a concerned priest from Nawfia who reported the case to the commissioner.
Onyekesi frowned at the trauma orchestrated by the level of molestation and exploitation the young girl passed through in the hands of the adults who were supposed to protect her.
The Commissioner assured the safety of the girl and encouraged men to protect women, especially young girls rather than take advantage for the sake of the society.
# Environmental experts and scholars have called for urgent action towards building resilient cities and sustainable urban systems in the face of rising climate change and rapid urbanization in Nigeria.
The call was made during the 2026 World Environment Day Celebration and Annual Lecture Series organized by the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, with the theme, “Urbanization and Climate Change: Building Resilient Cities for a Sustainable Future in Nigeria.”
In a remark, the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, called on residents to take greater responsibility for protecting their environment and supporting government efforts to build climate-resilient communities.
He observed that Awka is expanding rapidly, with the Anambra State Government already developing “Awka 2.0” to reduce congestion in the capital city, while expressing concern over erosion threatening parts of the university community and blaming some of the environmental problems on indiscriminate building on waterways and poor environmental practices by residents.
Chairman of the occasion, Professor Philip Phil-Eze, said sustainability has become a necessity rather than an option, stressing that human activities and built environments must exist in harmony with nature to achieve sustainable development goals.
He added that environmental degradation, climate change, population growth, and rapid urbanization now demand practical and innovative approaches to development and spatial planning.
# Anambra State Government’s recognized and certified Igwe of Awka, Igwe Obi Gibson Nwosu has inaugurated new Cabinet chief of the place as well as Advisory members.
During the inauguration, Igwe Gibson charged the newly inaugurated cabinet chief and advisory members to actively work towards the restoration of peace, unity and prosperity in Awka Kingdom.
Recall that Professor Chukwuma Soludo visited Igwe Gibson Nwosu during the Imo awka festival celebration and urged that peace should return to Awka.
# The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, has held its June Congress with a call for good governance and people-oriented policies and programmes to promote societal development.
The congress, which took place at the Godwin Ezemo NUJ Secretariat, Awka, attracted members of the union from across the state and offered them the opportunity to deliberate on issues concerning the union and the state.
In a remark, the Chairman of the NUJ, Anambra State Council, Dr. Odogwu Emeka-Odogwu, described journalists as the conscience and watchdog of society, stating that the union would continue to hold political leaders accountable in the interest of the people, and urged journalists to maintain professionalism and uphold ethical standards in the discharge of their duties.
A guest at the event and politician, Honourable Ikechukwu Okonkwo, stressed the need for governments at all levels to always place the welfare of the people first by creating employment opportunities, promoting skills acquisition, and strengthening security in order to reduce crime and criminality in society.
In a presentation on her journey in journalism, a speaker at the event, Comrade Kasie Aboneh, reminded journalists that their profession is a prestigious one with the capacity to effect positive change in government and society, urging them to remain committed to the ideals of the profession.
# The Acting Managing Director of the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Barrister Juliet Mbonu-Ike, has said that the media establishment is open to strategic partnerships with individuals and organizations for mutual benefit.
Speaking when she received on a courtesy visit, a delegation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Awka and District Society, the ABS Acting MD commended the group for its scholarship scheme and other ways the institute is giving back to society, just as she expressed delight that women are taking up leadership positions, including in the ICAN Awka and District Society.
In his remarks, an ex-officio member of ICAN Awka and District Society, Mr. Bethrand Okolo, said the visit was to inform and invite the ABS boss to the group’s investiture ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, 6th June, in Awka, where the 2026/2027 District Executive Committee, chaired by Mrs. Amaka Ezeogu, will be inaugurated.
