Rainy Season: NSCDC Warns Anambra Residents Against Blocking Drainages

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has advised residents to desist from dumping refuse into drainages and water channels, warning that the practice could worsen flooding and other avoidable disasters during the rainy season.

Speaking on Monday at the NSCDC State Command Headquarters in Awka, the Anambra State Commandant, Maku Olatunde, through the Head of Media and Tactical Operations, Okadigbo Edwin, said heavy rainfall is often accompanied by increased risks of flooding, building collapse, erosion, and other environmental hazards.

According to the Command, many of these incidents can be prevented if residents adopt proper waste disposal practices and comply with established safety guidelines.

The NSCDC urged citizens to regularly clear drainages around their homes and business premises, avoid building on waterways, and refrain from activities that obstruct the free flow of water.

Okadigbo noted that blocked drainage systems remain one of the major causes of flooding in communities, often leading to the destruction of property and, in severe cases, loss of lives.
He also advised residents of riverine communities to remain vigilant and be prepared to relocate to safer, higher ground whenever water levels begin to rise.

The spokesperson disclosed that the NSCDC is collaborating with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), local government authorities, and the Anambra State Government to implement comprehensive flood mitigation measures for the 2026 rainy season.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that as part of these efforts, the Command’s Disaster Management Unit has intensified public sensitization campaigns and stakeholder engagements across flood-prone local government areas to improve preparedness, reduce the impact of flooding, and safeguard lives and livelihoods across the state.
