Nigeria Warns of Possible Retaliation Over Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

The Nigerian government has strongly condemned a fresh wave of xenophobic violence targeting African migrants in South Africa and has not ruled out retaliatory measures.

Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed deep displeasure over the hostility directed at Nigerians and other black Africans, particularly given Nigeria’s historical support during the anti-apartheid struggle.

“Nigerians sacrificed funds, resources, and public support for South Africa’s independence. The current treatment of Nigerians is deeply troubling,” she said.

The minister highlighted that legitimate Nigerian business owners have had their shops looted and set ablaze, accusing some South Africans of selectively targeting black African migrants while sparing other foreign nationals.

She warned that Nigeria is considering possible retaliatory steps, though any decision would require approval at the highest level of government and legislative input.

The comments come amid renewed anti-immigrant protests in Pretoria and Johannesburg, where foreigners are being blamed for unemployment, crime and pressure on public services.

Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities have begun screening over 1,000 citizens in South Africa for voluntary repatriation following registration with the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria.
