Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has threatened to leave the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following a dispute over the replacement of several candidates submitted by his Kwankwasiyya faction.
The crisis erupted after the party adjusted some federal and state assembly tickets to enforce a pre-agreed 60/40 power-sharing arrangement between the Kwankwasiyya bloc and the original NDC structure. Under the formula, Kwankwasiyya was allocated 60 percent of elective positions and party offices.
Affected federal constituencies include Kumbotso, Nassarawa, Kano Municipal, Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Sumaila/Takai and Gwale. Changes were also made to state assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu.
The adjustments were outlined in a document signed by Kano State NDC Chairman Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga.
The development comes barely days after NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi named Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 election, raising fresh concerns about unity within the opposition party.
The row highlights ongoing challenges in managing internal power-sharing agreements as the NDC prepares for next year’s polls.
