UK Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has warned that the country’s economic and political challenges will persist even after Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s departure, criticising Labour’s policy choices.
Reacting swiftly to Starmer’s resignation announcement on Monday, Badenoch accused his government of a series of missteps that have harmed Britain.
“Hiking national insurance. The Family Farm Tax. Giving up on real welfare reform. Not funding our defence. Not drilling our own oil and gas. Appointing Peter Mandelson, then lying about what had happened,” she listed on X.
Badenoch stressed that the problems are not limited to Starmer personally but stem from Labour’s broader ideology.
“Britain is not ungovernable. Keir Starmer is a terrible Prime Minister. But the problem isn’t just Starmer,” she said.
She added that Labour MPs “only want higher taxes to hand out more benefits,” describing these as the party’s core values.
Badenoch positioned the Conservatives as the party best equipped to revive the economy, declaring: “We need to get Britain working again. We need the Conservatives.”
Starmer’s exit after less than two years in office has triggered a Labour leadership race, with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham among the frontrunners.
