Rapper Ycee has expressed deep concern over the declining emphasis on education and the rising normalisation of ignorance in the country, warning of an impending “Olodo uprising.”
In a recent interview on the Afropolitan podcast, the artist criticised what he sees as a societal shift away from celebrating academic excellence towards embracing mediocrity and quick wealth.
“Nigerian society is no longer celebrating academic excellence. People don’t even want to go to school anymore. It’s not even Yahoo culture anymore; now we have a ‘Peller culture’,” Ycee said.
He described the current situation as an “Olodo uprising,” a term referring to the glorification of the uneducated or “dullard” in local parlance.
“This ‘Olodo’ uprising we are witnessing is terrible. It feels like we are trying so hard to accommodate ignorance so people won’t feel bad, and now they seem to be the majority. The massive attack on Nigeria’s educational system is alarming,” he added.
Ycee pointed to the influence of social media personalities who gain fame and fortune through controversial or low-effort content as contributing to the problem, sending the wrong message to young Nigerians.
