Debutants Cape Verde Qualify for World Cup Knockout Stage for the First Time Ever

Cape Verde secured a historic place in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup after drawing 0-0 with Saudi Arabia, advancing as runners-up in their group on the final matchday.

The Blue Sharks, making their debut in the tournament, celebrated wildly as results elsewhere confirmed their progression to the round of 32, where they will face defending champions Argentina.

Guardian correspondent Nick Ames captured the emotion in Houston: “For a few days at least, the Blue Sharks can scent Argentinian blood. What a scene they presented at the end after drawing for a third time and improbably, magnificently, qualifying from Group H as runners-up.”

Their players and coach Bubista huddled around a mobile phone to follow Uruguay’s defeat to Spain, erupting in celebration upon confirmation of the result.

Goalkeeper Vozinha, already a cult hero in the tournament, produced key saves to keep the score level as Cape Verde defended resolutely against a Saudi side that struggled to create clear chances.

The goalless draw was enough for Cape Verde to finish ahead of Uruguay in the standings, marking one of the fairytale stories of the expanded 48-team competition.

Saudi Arabia’s campaign ended in disappointment as they failed to secure the victory needed to stay alive in the tournament.
