Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clarified that the Court of Appeal’s judgment did not invalidate the African Democratic Congress (ADC) primaries for the 2027 general elections, dismissing attempts to misrepresent the ruling.
Atiku, the ADC’s 2027 presidential candidate, described claims that the verdict ended the party’s ticket as “misinformation” aimed at demoralising the opposition. “Those celebrating today should celebrate with caution,” he said in a statement.
He emphasised the legal distinction between party congresses and candidate nominations. “The judgment being celebrated relates to the conduct of state congresses and the tenure of State Executive Committees. It does not… amount to a judicial nullification of the ADC’s primary elections conducted under the Electoral Act,” Atiku stated.
The former vice president announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court for clarity.
“We remain respectful of the judiciary and have already instructed our legal team to approach the Supreme Court,” he added.
Atiku urged ADC supporters to stay focused. “The road to 2027 remains open… Our destination remains unchanged, and by the grace of God and the will of the Nigerian people, we shall arrive.”
