Senate has passed amendments to the Federal Road Safety Corps Act proposing a N50,000 fine for anyone convicted of hawking, trading or preaching inside commercial vehicles.
The bill, which awaits presidential assent, aims to reduce distractions and enhance commuter safety on Nigerian roads. It also increases penalties for several traffic offences, including driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, now punishable by up to N100,000 fine or two years’ imprisonment.
Lawmakers introduced the provision to discourage activities that divert drivers’ attention. Motorists refusing roadside breath tests by FRSC officials face a N50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both.
The revised law lists 52 traffic violations with updated penalties to strengthen enforcement and improve compliance. The changes reflect efforts to curb road crashes amid evolving security and safety challenges.
