Kwankwaso Confirms Written One-term Pact With Obi for 2027 Presidency

Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has confirmed the existence of a written agreement with Peter Obi stipulating that the latter would serve only one four-year term if elected president in 2027, after which power would return to the North.

Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, disclosed the pact in a television interview. “We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” he said.

He expressed confidence that Obi would honour the deal. “Oh yes, I personally believe him and I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, he will change his mind when the time comes, and we are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper,” Kwankwaso stated.

The agreement, he explained, ensures rotation. “The agreement is what you said, that after four years… then it comes back to the North,” he added.

Kwankwaso said the current political arrangement supports a southern presidency for four years before power shifts northward. Obi has repeatedly pledged to serve only one term if elected.
