Lionel Messi has agreed a deal to take control of Spanish second-division club Eldense, expanding his growing portfolio of football club ownerships, according to reports.
The agreement, still subject to due diligence and approval from Spain’s National Sports Council, would see Messi take over the club currently owned by Colombian investment group Grupo TH.
The move would make Eldense the second Spanish side linked to Messi after he bought Barcelona-based fifth-tier club Cornella in April 2026. Unlike the semi-professional Cornella, Eldense competes in Spain’s professional ranks.
Messi, who continues to play for Inter Miami, has also invested in Uruguayan club Deportivo LSM alongside former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez.
Eldense, founded in 1921, spent most of its history outside Spain’s top two divisions before returning to the second tier in 2023 after nearly six decades. The club was relegated in 2025 but won promotion again this summer.
Spanish football authorities may raise regulatory concerns if two clubs under the same ownership compete in the same division.
Eldense have struggled at the start of the new season, failing to win any of their first four matches and recently dismissing coach Claudio Barragan.
If completed, the takeover would mark Messi’s first ownership of a professional Spanish club as he builds interests beyond his playing career.
