An aide to former Anambra State governor Peter Obi on Monday rejected allegations that the state borrowed and spent 2 billion naira from ecological funds during Obi’s tenure.
Valentine Obienyem, special adviser to Obi on media, said the claims circulating about the funds were false. He stated that the money in question was a grant from the ecological fund allocated to address erosion in Ekwulobia and remained untouched when Obi left office.
“We reiterate that Anambra State under Obi did not borrow and spend any such money,” Obienyem said in a statement.
He published what he described as the relevant account details as of March 17, 2014: Ecological Funds / IGR Consolidated Account at First Bank of Nigeria, account number 2018779464, with a balance of 2,139,951,400 naira.
“At the time Obi left office, the money was still intact,” he added.
Obienyem suggested that any subsequent misappropriation should be addressed by current authorities.
“If Prof. Soludo or anyone else has misappropriated the money, they should please let us know,” he said.
