French forward Kylian Mbappé has said he would dedicate the Ballon d’Or to Africa should he claim the award, citing his enduring ties to the continent.
In comments to Radio France Internationale (RFI), the Real Madrid striker stated: “I’ve never lost the connection with my roots and my origins. Every time I go to Africa, I feel the love from the people.”
He added: “I’ve always felt very loved on the African continent. I hope I can leave with the Ballon d’Or and, in one way or another, dedicate it to them too.”
Mbappé, who has Cameroonian and Algerian heritage, reflected on his individual performances over the past year. “I’ve had a great individual year and I know that’s the most important criteria for the Ballon d’Or, now I believe,” he said.
“I was the top scorer in all competitions. I think it could be a good and right year for me to win it. I feel it deep down.”
The 27-year-old acknowledged the competitive pressure surrounding the prize. “I would be disappointed to not win it. When a competitor doesn’t win, he is disappointed… so my level of trust is high,” Mbappé said. “My competitive spirit would be hurt in that case.”
The Ballon d’Or, awarded annually by France Football, recognises the world’s best male footballer.
