# The immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has called on the people of Aguleri and Umuoba Anam to immediately cease hostilities and sheathe their swords to allow the Anambra State Government to amicably mediate in the dispute that has resulted in the wanton destruction of lives and property.
In a statement released Dr Paul Nwosu and made available to newsmen in Awka, Obiano disclosed that he had a long and fruitful discussion with his successor, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, on the crisis.
According to Obiano, Governor Soludo demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues involved and assured him that he had already waded into the matter, including the deployment of the police and military to quell further hostilities. He said the Governor is determined to get to the root of the matter.
Chief Obiano, who hails from Aguleri, appealed to both communities to lay down their arms and fully cooperate with the government and law enforcement agencies.
He said that despite the sacrilegious burning of the palaces of the present and former Igwe Aguleri, as well as other properties around Ama Igwe, the communities must resist further escalation to avert more carnage and loss of lives and pave the way for lasting peace.

Dr. Mefor stated this in Ogidi during the reception organised for the Chairman of Idemili North Local Government Area, Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, shortly after he was sworn-in for a second term in Awka alongside other chairmen.
The commissioner, who spoke in an interview with journalists, said the celebrations at Idemili North Headquarters mirror what is happening simultaneously across the 21 local government areas of the state following the conclusion of the chairmanship elections.
He described the local government as the third tier of government now enjoying autonomy as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution as amended, noting that many chairmen, including the Idemili North Mayor, are already executing major projects such as road construction.
# The Anambra State Police Command has alerted residents to an emerging pattern of criminal activities involving the use of motorcycles to facilitate robbery and other offences.
The alert follows recent incidents, including the arrest of a motorcycle rider who was found in possession of a pistol during a stop-and-search operation in Nnewi.
In a separate incident in Aguleri, which is currently under investigation, a motorcycle rider was reportedly attacked and dispossessed of his motorcycle and other personal belongings. The incident tragically resulted in the death of the victim.
Preliminary observations by the Command indicate that criminal elements may be exploiting motorcycles to facilitate their movements and carry out robbery and other criminal activities, particularly against unsuspecting members of the public and fellow motorcycle users.
The Command also observed that some motorcycle owners do not properly register their motorcycles or maintain adequate ownership documentation. According to the Police, this can make it more difficult to identify, trace and recover motorcycles when they are stolen or subsequently used in criminal activities.
In response to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to intensify sensitisation and community engagement with motorcycle riders’ associations, Presidents-General of communities, vigilante groups and other relevant stakeholders within their respective areas of responsibility.
