Rangers International FC of Enugu have secured bragging rights in the Oriental Derby after defeating fellow South-East rivals Abia Warriors 3-1 at their temporary home, the Awka City Stadium, Anambra State.
The Flying Antelopes produced a strong performance to claim all three points, with Godwin Obaje opening the scoring in the 37th minute before captain Chidiebere Nwobodo doubled the advantage four minutes into the second half.
Abia Warriors reduced the deficit from the penalty spot, but Rangers held firm before Akorode Daniel sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal in the 95th minute.
The result represents another significant statement from the defending NPFL champions, who continue their impressive start to the campaign.
With the Matchweek 7 victory, the Fidelis Ilechukwu-led side remain top of the NPFL table with 16 points.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that before kick-off, Rangers striker Godwin Obaje was celebrated for reaching a century of league goals.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Abia Warriors coach, Imama Amapakabo, described the encounter as entertaining but blamed his strikers for failing to convert their chances.
“We created better chances, but in defence we were complacent and got punished for losing concentration. This game has come and gone; we have to focus on our next match.
“I’m the last person to complain about officiating, but there was a big error in the fourth minute of the game, and that would have changed the outcome of the score. But this is football; sometimes such things happen.”
Meanwhile, Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr Patrick Agha-Mba, assured Rangers International of the state government’s continued support.
Agha-Mba commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for providing an enabling environment for sports to thrive in Anambra State.
