INEC dismisses fake online list of governorship candidates

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday dismissed as fake an online publication purporting to be a special announcement listing governorship candidates in six states.

The commission identified the states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.

In a public notice shared on its official social media platforms, INEC said: “The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC.”

It urged the public to disregard the document and refrain from sharing it.

“The Commission further wishes to clarify that any information suggesting that INEC has issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the aforementioned states is false,” the statement added.

INEC advised Nigerians to rely solely on its official notices, press releases and verified communication channels, listing its website as inecnigeria.org, its X and Instagram handles as @inecnigeria, its Facebook page as INEC Nigeria, and its news portal as inecnews.com.

It also provided contact details including a call centre number, 0700-2255-4632, and email for enquiries.

The warning came two days after INEC published final lists of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections, amid reports of omissions of some candidates, including the Peoples Democratic Party’s nominees in Ogun and Gombe states.

The commission reiterated its commitment to keeping the public accurately informed and called on Nigerians to obtain electoral information only through its official channels.
