Over 1,200 arrested as France protests over living costs turn violent

More than 1,200 people were arrested across France during nationwide protests over the cost of living that escalated into violent clashes, looting and arson, authorities said.

An estimated 550,000 people took part in demonstrations on Saturday, according to the interior ministry, while unions put the figure at around 800,000. The marches focused on rising fuel prices, the cost of living and deteriorating public services, including schools.

In Paris, significant clashes continued into the evening as riot police used tear gas and water cannon. Buildings were set alight in the capital and other cities, including Limoges where a large fire at the town hall caused the roof to partly collapse.

Looting and vandalism targeted city halls, businesses and shops in several cities. Sixty law enforcement officers were injured, including two who were taken to hospital unconscious, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said.

“No room for violence in our Republic,” President Emmanuel Macron posted on social media as the unrest unfolded.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the events as involving an “escalation in violence.” The main marches in Paris and elsewhere appeared largely peaceful during the afternoon before fringe groups engaged in confrontations with police and widespread damage.

The unrest followed weeks of student-led protests and added to political pressure ahead of elections due in 2027.
