Soludo Constitutes Commission Of Inquiry Into Umuoba Anam–Aguleri Crisis

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has constituted a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the communal crisis between Umuoba Anam and Aguleri communities and recommend measures to achieve a lasting resolution of the dispute.

The establishment of the commission follows the Governor’s directive that the immediate and remote causes of the conflict be thoroughly investigated, with a view to exploring all lawful avenues for restoring enduring peace between the affected communities.

In a press release signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake, the Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that peace, justice and the rule of law prevail in Anambra State.

He also urged stakeholders in both communities to cooperate fully with the commission and refrain from any action capable of undermining ongoing peace efforts.

The commission is chaired by retired Justice Nkemdilim Izuakor, with Ven. Onyinye Ilione, Rev. Fr. Cyril Elochukwu Mokwe, C.P. Ndianefo, Esq., HRH Peter Chukwuma Anigbogu and HRH Peter Ezeamama as members. The Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Boundary Matters, Hon. Ekenechukwu Okoye, will serve as secretary.

The commission is mandated to determine the immediate and remote causes of the dispute between Umuoba Anam and Aguleri, including the crisis that occurred between October 1 and 4, 2026.

It will also investigate factors that could trigger further hostilities between the two communities or involve either of them and neighbouring communities.

In addition, the commission is expected to recommend measures the state government should take to resolve the dispute and establish lasting peace across the Anam and Aguleri communities and any other affected areas.

In carrying out its assignment, the commission is required to consider relevant court judgments and contractual agreements relating to the dispute.

The commission is expected to conclude its inquiry and submit its report to the Governor on or before February 28, 2027.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that the constitution of the commission builds on the peace process initiated by Governor Soludo, who had earlier convened a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Awka. The meeting brought together traditional rulers, presidents-general and community leaders from Aguleri, Umueri and Anam.

At the meeting, the parties agreed to a total cessation of hostilities, while the Governor pledged to establish a commission of inquiry to examine historical grievances, petitions and other issues underlying the conflict.

The inquiry is expected to provide a framework for addressing the disputed issues and guiding the state government on measures to prevent further violence and promote peaceful coexistence among the affected communities.
