Spanish second-division club CD Tenerife on Tuesday confirmed the death of striker Jesús de Miguel, 30, a day after he suffered a heavy collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a league match.
The incident occurred late in Tenerife’s encounter with FC Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium. De Miguel and Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono collided while contesting a loose ball outside the penalty area. De Miguel was left unconscious on the pitch.
Medical staff treated him for several minutes before he was stretchered off and taken to the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The match, which stood at 2-2, was abandoned in the 108th minute. Owono was shown a red card.
Spanish media reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest after the collision but was resuscitated in the ambulance. His condition later deteriorated, and he died at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
In a statement, CD Tenerife said: “Broken with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.”
The club added: “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this feeling of overwhelming sadness. We stand with his devastated family, his loved ones and the entire Tenerife family, who mourn this cruel outcome.”
De Miguel’s family thanked those who sent messages of support and requested privacy. Clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid were among those offering condolences.
