Moghalu, Ogbechie, others task UNN business school for improvement

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Kingsley Moghalu has tasked the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to ensure that its Business School stands out by making it a mini-and-cottage business school in Africa.

Speaking at the public presentation of the UNN Business School at the Enugu Campus of the university (UNEC), Moghalu noted that business was so important as it drives the economy. Nigerian people, especially in Eastern Nigeria and beyond needed to know modern business thinking and modern business method.

“What are the drivers of productivity, whether it is in industrial manufacturing, trading, e-commerce and all those things? This is what this business school is expected to teach,” he said.

He spoke further: “The school should focus a lot on the philosophy of the school and to inculcate it into all the students. The second is to ensure that the curriculum is very superior, combining the balance between the foundation that is the theoretical and philosophical foundation and practical skills for entrepreneurship that can create wealth for many, many millions of people in Nigeria.

“How do you start small businesses, how do you access capital, these are the kind of things I want this school to teach and they should advise the government very, very strongly. They should position themselves to be an influential adviser not only to businesses, but to the government which creates the enabling environment for business. So these are the kind of practical steps that the school can use to create a lot of impact within a very short time.”

Also tasking the school, the chairman of the occasion and the Group Managing Director, Rainoil Limited, Dr. Gabriel Ogbechie, said that the establishment of the business school would add great value to businesses and economy of the South East, in particular, and Nigeria, in general.

Ogbechie who stressed that the prosperity of Nigeria rests largely on how much entrepreneurship and the business community were encouraged, called for the creation of a pool of young entrepreneurs to fast-track expansion and sustenance of business and economic frontiers of the region, and the country as a whole, saying, “We must encourage young people to go into business if we must build our economy.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Charles Igwe said the business school was established by the university a few years ago and incorporated to inculcate professional education leading to the award of Masters and Doctorate degrees in diverse areas of specialization as well as provide shorten certifications, research and consultancy services.
