* A two-week capacity building training organised for workers in Anambra State Government employ has ended in Awka. The training, which began on twenty-fourth January at the Staff Development Centre, office of the state Head of Service, was designed to make the workers understand modern technological system in performing official duties effectively and efficiently.
* Labour Party (LP) has said it is making special interventions, not only in making sure that registered voters in the region get their PVCs ahead of the polls; but also in many other areas that would boost voter interest in the region because of the strategic nature of the 2023 general election. The Head, Intervention Team of the Obi/Datti Presidential Campaign Council of Labour party, Dr. Ifedi Okwenna disclosed this in Awka during a special meeting with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, led by its chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Center, NUJ Secretariat.
* The traditional ruler of Oko Community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Prof Laz Ekwueme, has appealed to the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to expedite action in encouraging quick circulation of the new Naira notes by the commercial banks in the country in order not to add pains in the lives of what they described as the long suffering Nigerians.
* As the international community marks World Cancer Day, Anambra State Governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has explained that despite current successes recorded, there is need for increased awareness and continuous education to eliminate the killer disease in Anambra State. The Anambra State Governor’s wife further explained that with the ongoing free cervical cancer screening and treatment initiated by the Anambra State Government for women and girls residing in the state, the current administration has shown that it is committed to enacting right policies that would not only tackle the disease, but also save the lives of those living in the state.
* Medical doctors working in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), under the aegis of Association of Resident Doctors have begun a five-day warming strike. The body said the action was as a result of attacks on its members by relatives of patients. The latest of such attack was said to have happened when relatives of a deceased patient held a doctor hostage for two hours, amid torture.
* Culture and tradition of Urum community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra state were at the peak as the sixteen newly inducted members of the prestigious Ozo society of Urum Anike Ancient kingdom embarked on market outing, which is the last ritual to fully become an Ozo title holder in the town. The market outing ceremony, which was done at Oye Urum, and later concluded at Community Primary School field in Urum, attracted members of the community, as well as people from neighboring communities and beyond; who came to felicitate with the new ndi Ozo Uru Anike Ancient Kingdom.
* For Victor Ugochukwu, it was a defining day in his life as he became a proud owner of a brand new motorcycle, with full particulars, courtesy of the Bishop of Awka Catholic Diocese, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor. It was in continuation of the bishop’s youth empowerment initiative. ANN recalled that on 23rd November 2022, Bishop Ezeokafor empowered 111 youths from across the diocese as part of the event marking his 70th birthday celebration.
* The Chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, has called on headteachers and teachers in the state to ensure they collect their Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, before the February fifth deadline announced by Independent National Electoral commission, INEC. Dr.
Nwadinobi, who made the call while speaking with news men in her office in Awka, urged the headteachers and teachers to use their voting strength to retain the good governance being experienced in the state during the forthcoming 2023 general elections.
* A public policy analyst, Mr Polycarp Onwubiko, has called for transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the contributions to the Anambra State Health Insurance agency, (ASHIA) to get the satisfaction of the contributors to the healthcare scheme.
* Those who fear that the presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, may lose votes because of the similarity of logos between the LP and Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, have been told there is no cause for alarm as the country’s Electoral Act does not prohibit any voter from seeking clarification on how to vote for candidates of their choice. The ZLP candidate for Dunukofia, Njikoka and Anaocha Constituency for the Federal House of Representatives, Barr Val Ayika, disclosed this to Fides in Awka last Wednesday.
* The Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha, His Lordship, the Most Rev. Denis Isizoh, has reminded parents that it is their responsibility to train up their children at least to the age of 18 before leaving them to face the world. The Prelate gave the advice during Sunday evening instruction at Our Lady of Victory Parish, Umueri. According to him, parents should not get tired of performing their primary assignment, which is raising their wards in a godly way.
* Indigenes of the Uruagu-Nnewi community in Nnewi North local government area of Anambra state, took to the streets to protest the alleged dilapidated road infrastructure in the area. The protesters, who were majorly youths and elderly men, displayed placards bearing different inscriptions depicting their annoyance over the alleged neglect of roads in the area.
* The National Population Commission, NPC, Anambra State, has organized a ten-day and thirteen-day state-level training for Specialized Workforce and Facilitators for the 2023 Population and Housing Census. The opening ceremony of the training held in Awka attracted state and federal officials of NPC, Anambra State Government functionaries, and the one thousand, one hundred and sixty-three trainees.
