* Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Dr Nonye Soludo says the government alone cannot stop domestic violence. The governor’s wife, who stated this in Awka, explained that for the case to be eliminated, everyone including those going through them, must show better action and commitment to end the menace. Dr Soludo noted that the first step to tackling cases of abuse and domestic violence was by exposing those involved, urging those who notice signs of such incidents in homes, schools, offices or any place, to reach out to the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.
* All candidates for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Anambra State Congress are expected to participate in the Anambra Media debate 2023 set to take place on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at Best Western Meloch Hotel, Ifite Awka at 4pm. The media debate which is being organised by Anambra Independent Media Support Group in partnership with Anambra News Online Situation Room comes just a few days before the state Congress.
* The Academic Staff Union, Oko Polytechnic (ASUP) recently held the maiden edition of Honorary and Recognition Award to its retiring members for their doggedness, positive contributions and service to the union and institution. About five union members who had received retirement letter from January to May, received a cheque of One hundred and fifty thousand naira each and award of recognition from the union in appreciation for their service to humanity.
* The Senator-elect for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Victor Umeh, has lauded the virtues of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi.
Umeh who spoke at the public presentation of a compendium on Peter Obi, titled: “Many Voices, One Perspective” in, Awka, Anambra State, eulogized Obi as one of the greatest Nigerians to ever live and impact many lives positively.
Describing Obi as development-oriented person, Umeh said there would be no serious political discussion in the country without Obi being at the centre. The Senator expressed optimism that Obi had the capacity to give Nigeria a positive direction.
* The Anambra State Head of Service, Barr. Theodora Okwy Igwegbe, has charged the various Labour Union Heads to ensure that they align their operations with the government’s agenda to enable rapid actualization of planned workers’ welfare packages. She made this call during the State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council meeting held at the Committee Hall of the Office of the Head of Service, Awka.
* Traders under the aegis of UBA Planks and Joist Association, Bridge-Head Market Onitsha, Anambra State have insisted that they got approval from Anambra State Physical Planning Board before building their plaza that was pulled down by the TC Chairman of Onitsha South LGA recently. They also debunked the story that the Chairman gave them notice and reminders before the demolition of the structures.
* Mmaigbo Empowerment Foundation, an NGO team has paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Mr. Don Onyenji, to deliberate on the promotion of the Igbo cultural heritage and identity through skill acquisition and youth empowerment programme, they intend to hold on the June 24. The visit was held at the Commissioner’s office at Jerome Udorji Secretariat, Awka. In his remark, the Commissioner commended them for initiating such ideas, noting that youth empowerment and skill acquisition programme are also part of the agenda of the state government through the “one youth, two skills” initiative organized by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment.
* A chieftain of All Progressives Grand Alliance and ousted President-General of Bridge-Head Market Onitsha, Mr. Sunday Obinze, has indicated his intention to drag the Anambra State Government to court if it fails to reinstate him to his position. In a letter to the Anambra State Government, through the Attorney General, Prof.S.N. Ifeme and made available to newsmen in Onitsha, Obinze’s counsel, Eto Okoye of Iloegbune Okoye chambers, which serves demand for the reinstatement of Obinze and pre-action notice, demanded for the immediate reinstatement of Obinze within one week of receiving the letter.
* The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor, was involved in a frightening accident, at Agu-Awka junction in Awka, Anambra State capital. The accident which left his car damaged beyond recognition was the second accident that happened at that junction the same night. Earlier, the former Managing Director of Anambra Signage, Chief Jude Emecheta, had an accident at the same junction that left him unconscious, while his car was damaged beyond repair. The Speaker who was in his home only responded to an emergency call from Emecheta’s friend and thereupon rushed to the accident scene and took Emecheta to the hospital.
