Anambra Assembly Holds Valedictory Session For Late Nelson Achukwu

…A physically Challenged Legislator Who “Empowered the Physically Fit”


‌‌‎Anambra State House of Assembly on Thursday held valedictory session in honour of Late Hon. Nelson Achukwu, former lawmaker who represented Nnewi South two Constituency (2003–2007).

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, in his tribute highlighted the enduring nature of the Late Achukwu’s service.

Rt. Hon. Udeze maintained that late Achukwu was a “bridge between the aspirations of his people and the machinery of governance,” serving as a voice for the voiceless and champion of grassroots development.

Udeze stressed that “Good leadership is not measured by length of tenure but by depth of impact,” and by this measure, late Hon. Achukwu served honorably.

‎Addressing the family, the Speaker offered comfort, assuring them that Achukwu’s life mattered and his legacy of diligent representation, faithful service, and unwavering commitment would forever inspire the House.

In his tribute, the Minority Leader of the 8th Assembly, Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi recounted the harrowing details of the late member’s murder, revealing that Hon. Achukwu was a victim of repeat abductions by the same Unknown Gunmen who collected over ₦50 million in ransom before ultimately killing him, severing his head and genitals.

Hon. Akaegbobi who is representing Nnewi South two Constituency, commended the late member’s wife for marrying Nelson with true love.

‎On his part, the Member representing Nnewi South One, ‎Hon. Nonso Atuchukwu, described Nelson as a “wonderful businessman, a good man, and a community leader who led from the front,” proving he was “everything one could call a man” despite his physical disability.

The Majority Leader of the House and member representing Ekwusigo Constituency, Hon. Ikenna Ofodebe, described the session as a “sober reflection.”. He highlighted that Hon. Nelson, a cripple, “empowered the physically fit,” employing over 100 persons. He was a go-getter who personified hard work.

‎Hon. Obi Okonkwo, speaking on behalf of the 3rd Assembly members, described the late former lawmake as a man of strong personal conviction who would stand by his beliefs regardless of circumstance, often crossing paths with the House leadership of the time due to his fearlessness.

Obi noted that late Achukwu was also generous to a fault and deeply grateful for any favour received.

the late Hon. Achukwu, who was physically challenged, was remembered as a man of immense capability and strong character.

Colleagues at the session highlighted his nickname, “Nelly Igbatulenyi,” given by his 3rd Assembly peers, and “Nelson Mandela,” given by his schoolmates, both reflecting his strong sense of justice and conviction.

The session was marked by profound tributes that celebrated his exceptional life as a lawyer, shrewd businessman, and community leader, juxtaposed with sorrow over the brutal manner of his death.

The Plenary was then adjourned to Tuesday, December 16, 2026.
