…Operators have been given June 5th to comply

Anambra State Government has issued a public notice directing all mortuary owners and operators across the state to ensure proper registration and renewal of their operating licenses in line with the Public Health Law of Anambra State.

Operators have been given until Friday, June 5, 2026, to complete their registration and renewal procedures, after which inspection and enforcement exercises will begin statewide.

Angel Network News (ANN) reports that
the directive, issued through the Directorate of Medical Services on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, is part of the state government’s ongoing healthcare reform and regulatory drive under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

According to the notice, all mortuaries currently operating in the state but not registered with the Directorate of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, Awka, are required to immediately commence their registration process.

The statement was signed by Dr. Chukwulobelu Ugochukwu, Director of Medical Services Department, for the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Anambra State Ministry of Health.

The Ministry also instructed mortuary facilities with expired licenses or those due for renewal to update their registrations without delay.

Hospitals providing mortuary services were equally directed to register their mortuary units independently, regardless of the registration status of the hospital itself.

The government warned that the directive also applies to mortuary facilities operating illegally or without proper approval within the state.

The Ministry explained that the exercise is aimed at strengthening regulation within the healthcare sector, improving standards in mortuary practices, preventing the spread of infectious diseases during outbreaks and pandemics, and curbing unlawful activities associated with improper handling and mutilation of corpses.

As part of the process, the Ministry of Health said it is currently updating its database of registered mortuary facilities across Anambra State to ensure effective monitoring, compliance, and enforcement of public health regulations.

The notice further stated that sanctions would be imposed on defaulters and illegally operating facilities in accordance with the law.
