Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after defeating Arsenal FC 4-3 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw in the final in Budapest.
The French champions survived an early scare after Arsenal struck first through Kai Havertz, whose sixth-minute goal handed the Premier League side a dream start in their first Champions League final appearance in two decades.
Arsenal held onto their advantage for much of the contest, frustrating PSG’s attacking line despite sustained pressure from the holders.
The breakthrough eventually came in the second half when PSG were awarded a penalty after a foul on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Forward Ousmane Dembele calmly converted from the spot in the 65th minute to level the score and revive the French side’s hopes.
Neither side could find a winner during regulation time or extra time despite several late chances, sending the final to a penalty shootout.
The decisive moment came when Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes missed a crucial penalty, allowing PSG to seal a 4-3 shootout victory and secure back-to-back European titles.
The triumph marks another major achievement for PSG manager Luis Enrique, whose side has now established itself among Europe’s elite after lifting consecutive Champions League trophies.
For Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta, the defeat was a painful end to an otherwise remarkable campaign. The London club had entered the final hoping to win the Champions League for the first time in its history after ending a 22-year wait for the English league title.
PSG captain Marquinhos lifted the trophy amid celebrations from players and supporters, while Arsenal’s wait for European football’s biggest prize continues.
