The lifeless bodies of two newborn twin infants were discovered in a drainage channel in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to Ikenga, police operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters received a report in the early hours of Sunday about the discovery of the infants abandoned in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, Okpoko.
Following the report, officers immediately secured the scene, gathered relevant evidence, and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
SP. Ikenga disclosed that preliminary investigations led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the deceased infants.
He said the suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators in determining the events that led to the tragic incident.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP. Ikioye Orutugu, described the discovery as a disturbing case of inhumanity and a gross violation of the sanctity of human life.
The Commissioner commended the swift response and professionalism of the police operatives, whose efforts led to the arrest of the parents shortly after the incident was reported.
CP Orutugu strongly condemned the act, stressing that every child deserves protection, care, and the opportunity to live and thrive.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable in connection with the incident is brought to justice.
