# The lifeless bodies of two newborn twin infants were discovered in a drainage channel in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to Ikenga, police operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters received a report in the early hours of Sunday about the discovery of the infants abandoned in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, Okpoko.
Following the report, officers immediately secured the scene, gathered relevant evidence, and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
SP. Ikenga disclosed that preliminary investigations led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the deceased infants.
He said the suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators in determining the events that led to the tragic incident.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP. Ikioye Orutugu, described the discovery as a disturbing case of inhumanity and a gross violation of the sanctity of human life.
The Commissioner commended the swift response and professionalism of the police operatives, whose efforts led to the arrest of the parents shortly after the incident was reported.
CP Orutugu strongly condemned the act, stressing that every child deserves protection, care, and the opportunity to live and thrive.
# The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze has enjoined Nigerian fathers to continue to take deliberate steps to ensure that their children are given the right training and exposure to become useful to themselves and society.
In his goodwill message to Nigerian fathers as they join their counterparts world over to celebrate the 2026 International Father’s Day, Rt. Hon. Rt. Hon. Udeze charged fathers including all parental figures to shun acts that challenge their integrity and status and urged them to take active hold of their families by providing adequate protection and other sundary necessities for them at all times.
He prayed God to empower fathers both spiritually and physically to enable them to carry out their onerous duties of raising responsible and God fearing families.
# Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have intervened in an alleged attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby in Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area, rescuing both mother and child and reuniting them with their family.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, explaining that the operation was triggered by credible intelligence provided by a concerned citizen.
According to the statement, officers attached to the Oyi Divisional Headquarters acted promptly on the information and traced the young woman to a location in Igbariam, where she was found with her infant daughter.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman allegedly concealed both her pregnancy and childbirth from her parents. Police further gathered that she left her family home in Imo State and relocated to Igbariam, where she stayed with a friend before the alleged plan to sell the baby was uncovered.
Following the intervention, the Police contacted the woman’s parents and relatives, who responded immediately. Both mother and child were subsequently reunited with their family to ensure they receive proper care, protection, supervision, and emotional support while investigations continue.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, commended the individual whose timely report led to the successful intervention. He described the action as a reflection of the vital role community members play in crime prevention and the protection of vulnerable persons.
The Commissioner also praised other residents who provided useful information, emphasizing that security remains a collective responsibility that requires cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public.
# The Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, has emphasized that fatherhood is far more than a title, describing it as a position that demands commitment, responsibility, and dedication.
Speaking on the significance of International Father’s Day, celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June, Bishop Ezeofor expressed concern that many fathers are falling short of their responsibilities within their families and society.
He called for a positive change in attitude among fathers to enable them fulfill their God-given roles effectively.
The cleric, who also serves as the National Chairman of the Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion Nigeria, urged Christian fathers to take the lead in the Church’s efforts to raise a godly generation capable of building a God-fearing and egalitarian society.
Describing fathers as the pillars and pastors of their homes, Bishop Ezeofor encouraged them to be exemplary in character and conduct wherever they find themselves. He also stressed the importance of investing in the education of their children, noting that such commitment is essential for securing a brighter future for the next generation.
# The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Grand Alliance has officially presented Certificates of Return to 44 candidates who emerged victorious in the party’s primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections in Anambra State.
The presentation ceremony took place at the party’s regional headquarters in Awka at the weekend.
The certificates were handed over by APGA’s National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, in the presence of party members and supporters.
Speaking with journalists after the event, Opara described the certificates as a reflection of the mandate and confidence reposed in the candidates by APGA members across the state.
He noted that the 44 candidates comprise three senatorial candidates, 11 House of Representatives candidates, and 30 candidates for the Anambra State House of Assembly.
# Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Esther Onyekesi, has charged fathers to always live up to expectations as the pillars of their various families.
Speaking on the 2026 International Fathers’ Day celebration, Mrs Onyekesi regretted that many fathers are no longer devoting adequate time to their families, which she said is the major reason many children are not receiving the balanced upbringing they should get from both their father and mother, and called on fathers to rise to the occasion.
According to Commissioner Onyekesi, fathers should see their position as a call to greater responsibility, especially as it concerns taking full charge of their families, with emphasis on providing for the family, staying and praying together with them, as well as serving as counsellors and pastors within the family.
Mrs Onyekesi, who regretted the increase in domestic violence in society, disclosed that the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare will soon engage stakeholders on ways to reduce the incidence of domestic violence, which she noted is seriously undermining the sanctity of the marriage institution.
She called on the public to always speak out and report to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare whenever they notice any form of domestic violence, child labour, or child abuse for necessary action.

# The Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Pius Okoye, has urged the leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to uphold his victory in the just-concluded party’s primary election.
The lawmaker made the appeal during a strategic engagement with the Obizi Women Association at his private residence in Amawbia.
Addressing the controversial aftermath of the election, the Deputy Speaker urged the party’s hierarchy to reverse what he characterised as a forcefully subverted mandate. He cautioned that overriding the democratic will of the party’s members who came out en masse to support their preferred aspirants introduces severe electoral vulnerabilities ahead of the general polls.
Amid growing concerns that the primary election crisis might trigger a wave of defections, the lawmaker used the grassroots meeting to reassure his supporters and party faithful that he is still a member of APGA, dispelling any rumours regarding a potential exit to an opposition political party, stating that his commitment to resolving the issues remains internal.
# Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command’s Rapid Response Unit (VCRU), while on patrol along the Igbariam–Achalla Road, intercepted and arrested two suspects identified as Williams Ndifon and David Missang, both aged 27.
The suspects were riding on a Daylong motorcycle when they were stopped by the police.
A search conducted on them led to the recovery of a locally made Beretta pistol, one live round of ammunition, the motorcycle, six GSM phones, two power banks, a sledgehammer, a chisel/metal crack tool, quantities of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, and a black polo shirt bearing the inscription “Nigeria Army Barracks Youths Foundation (NABYF).”
According to the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects are currently undergoing investigation to determine their involvement in armed robbery and other criminal activities.
In a related development, VCRU operatives acting on intelligence arrested a 21-year-old suspect, Oluchukwu Onyekwe, at Agukwu Nri in Anaocha Local Government Area.
The suspect was reportedly found in possession of a quantity of dried weeds suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.
Preliminary investigations also linked him to cult-related activities within the area.
Police said the suspect remains in custody while further investigations and interrogation continue.
The Command has urged residents to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies to strengthen efforts aimed at maintaining public safety and security across the state.
# The Federal High Court in Awka, Anambra State, has struck out a ₦100 million lawsuit filed by Enugu Electricity Distribution Company against human rights activist Osita Obi over his alleged role in electricity-related protests held in 2019.
The suit, marked FHC/AWK/CS/07/2020, was instituted by EEDC, which sought damages against Obi following protests organized to challenge persistent power outages and electricity service issues affecting consumers in Anambra State.
The case was heard at the Federal High Court, Awka, before Hon. Justice Bala Khalifa-Mohammed Usman.
During the latest hearing, neither EEDC nor its legal representatives appeared in court.
Counsel to the defendant, Barrister Martin Obi, urged the court to dismiss the matter and award ₦1 million in costs against EEDC, arguing that the company had repeatedly failed to prosecute the case diligently. He noted that the matter had been pending since 2019 and had moved through several jurisdictions, including Abuja, Enugu, and Awka, causing significant expenses for the defendant.
In his ruling, Justice Usman held that the applicant had failed to diligently prosecute the matter and consequently struck out the suit.
