Nnewi Chapel of the Anambra Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has expressed shock and dissatisfaction over the high rate of insecurity in the State. This comes on the heels of an assassination attempt on Sen. Ifeanyi Uba, representing Nnewi South senatorial zone of the state.
The call was contained in a resolution released by the Chapel at the end of its monthly meeting held at Nnewi North LG. Speaking after the meeting, the Chairperson of the Chapel, Chief Tempest Udeze who commiserated with the families of the deceased, called on the state government to tighten their security seatbelt. According to Chief Udeze:
“The attack on Senator Uba is unacceptable and the responsibility of every government is the protection of the lives and property of its citizenry. Anything short of that is unacceptable to the society.”
Chief Udeze maintained that:
“In as much as we believe that the Executive Governor, of Anambra State, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo is doing much in the area of security, however, due to the high level of decay in the sector from the last administration, we are urging him to step up his games. The fact that the hoodlums have the temerity to lay ambush to the convoy of a sitting senator shows that there is a gap in the security apparatus of the state.”
The seasoned scribe maintained that all this is indicative that:
“Intelligence gathering of the security agencies in the state is very poor if it has not collapsed. We are therefore the various organs of the security architecture in the state to do more to protect lives and property in the state.”
“Anambra citizens are independent-minded people that can survive tough situations, but no matter how strong-minded a people are, no human being is a above death and once the security is down it impacts negatively on every aspect of life.”
“Therefore, as citizens of this great state and members of this Distinguished Chapel, we thank His Excellency, Governor Soludo on his efforts to fight insecurity in the state while encouraging him to do more. We equally thank God for preserving the life of Senator Uba. Also, we most regrettably mourn the senseless loss of life of his assistances and security aids, It is so painful and we extend our condolences to the families of the deceased asking God to give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss”, he added.
Elder Pius Ezeogu, a senior member of the Chapel equally commended the Governor’s dogged effort to revamp the economy of Anambra State and turn the state into the Dubai of Africa. Speaking at the end of the meeting, he noted that a lot of work has been done in the area of developing the state but urged the Governor to increase the momentum. He equally emphasized the need to ensure the security of lives and property maintaining that no reasonable development can be achieved in an insecure environment.
