The Commissioner of Police Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu is taking proactive measures to prevent future truck accidents in the State.

Angel Network News reports that the CP in his office at Awka on Wednesday,
interacted with the Truck Union members.

CP Orutugu stated that the Police, Federal Road Safety Corps and other relevant agencies are to collaborate and implement necessary cautionary measures for the Drivers and Owners of trucks.

The Police boss noted that it has become necessary to engage the truck drivers and owners, following reports of truck accidents in recent times, especially on 15th March 2025 by 9pm at the Upper Iweka axis of Onitsha.

ANN recall that the accident claimed the lives of six persons and left a few others with various degrees of injury. Eyewitness accounts reveal that the accident occurred as a result of loss of control of a truck that rammed into pedestrians, two tricycles and a commercial bus loaded with passengers.

The CP described the incident as a preventive situation and regrets the loss of lives. He also highlighted some of the necessary strategies to be considered which include:

“Conducting Risk Assessments: Identifying potential hazards and taking steps to minimise them.

“Regular Vehicle Inspections: Ensuring that trucks are in good working condition to prevent accidents caused by mechanical failure.

“Providing Safety Training: Educating drivers on safe driving practices and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations.

Given the above, the Command aims to prevent avoidable tragedies and ensure the safety of all road users in the State.
