The Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has launched Green Clubs in beneficiary schools across Anambra State under the Green School and Climate Change Education Intervention (GSCCEI).
The initiative was formally inaugurated at Central School, Awka, with a focus on promoting environmental education and responsible environmental practices among pupils.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that the initiative aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s declaration of a state of emergency on the environment and the renewed Clean and Green Initiative unveiled on August 27, 2026, as part of activities marking Anambra State’s 35th anniversary.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Justina Chinyere Anyadiegwu, described the Green Clubs as more than an extracurricular activity, stressing that they represent a strategic investment in environmental sustainability and the future of children.
She noted that environmental protection had become central to the Soludo administration’s Solution Agenda and its vision of building a modern, liveable and prosperous Anambra State.
Dr. Anyadiegwu warned that climate change, flooding, gully erosion, indiscriminate waste disposal and environmental degradation posed serious threats to communities, livelihoods and the safety of children.
She emphasised the need to raise pupils who would excel academically while understanding their responsibility to protect and improve their environment.
The ASUBEB chairman also acknowledged the contributions of the First Lady, Dr. Nonye Soludo, through her Healthy Living Initiative, noting that clean and safe environments were essential to healthy people and thriving communities.
She charged pupils to become environmental ambassadors by keeping their classrooms and school compounds clean, protecting trees, disposing of waste properly and extending these practices to their homes and communities.
Teachers, should sustain the clubs through practical activities, including tree planting, school gardening and environmental sanitation. she added.
Dr. Anyadiegwu stressed that the success of the intervention should be measured by tangible improvements in school environments, waste-management practices and pupils’ understanding of their responsibility to protect the planet, rather than merely the number of clubs established.
She subsequently inaugurated the selected pupils and teachers who would establish and coordinate the Green Clubs in beneficiary schools, urging them to lead by example and promote practical environmental action.
In her remarks, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Education, Mrs. Obiageli Chiegboka, who represented the Commissioner for Education, conveyed the Governor’s goodwill and emphasised the importance of making environmental protection a shared responsibility.
She stated that climate change and environmental sustainability should not be left exclusively to governments and experts, noting that children must be equipped with the knowledge and habits needed to safeguard their future.
According to her, education should extend beyond classroom instruction to include proper waste management, tree planting, resource conservation and the development of responsible environmental habits.
Similarly, ASUBEB’s Agric Desk Officer, Mrs. Okonkwo Oguejiofor Kate, urged head teachers and teachers to take ownership of the Green Clubs and ensure they remained active and effective.
She advocated practical activities such as tree planting, school gardening, recycling, proper waste disposal, sanitation exercises and environmental awareness campaigns.
Mrs. Oguejiofor described the pupils as young ambassadors of a greener Anambra State, encouraging them to practice and promote the environmental habits acquired in school within their homes and communities.
In her remarks, the Director of Academic Services, Mrs. Chukwuma Christiana, welcomed participants and explained that the Green Clubs were designed to instil environmental management values in learners and contribute to building an environmentally friendly society.
Angel Network News (ANN) reports that the event ended with a collective commitment to promoting cleaner, greener and more climate-resilient schools across Anambra State through sustained environmental education and practical action.
