Nigeria’s Super Falcons saw their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Women’s World Cup end with a 2-1 defeat to Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, marking the first time in history they will miss the tournament.
Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring for South Africa in the 56th minute before Refiloe Jane doubled the lead in the 77th minute.
Nigeria pulled one back deep into stoppage time when Christy Ucheibe converted from the penalty spot in the 90+2nd minute.
The penalty was awarded after Jane was penalised for handball and shown a second yellow card, resulting in her dismissal.
Despite the late goal, the Super Falcons were unable to find an equaliser, confirming their exit from World Cup contention.
