An aircraft flying from Enugu skidded off the runway upon landing at Benin Airport on Thursday during torrential rainfall, aviation officials said, with no injuries reported.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) moved quickly to clarify the incident, dismissing initial reports of a crash and describing it as a runway excursion caused by adverse weather.
“The aircraft landed safely but skidded off the runway due to the adverse weather conditions,” Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, said.
All passengers and crew members were confirmed safe, with video footage showing them disembarking after the plane veered into a swampy area beside the runway.

 The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had not issued an official comment as of Thursday evening. Efforts to reach FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku were unsuccessful.
Aviation authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, which highlights ongoing concerns over weather-related disruptions at Nigerian airports.
