The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) will honour Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, with an honorary doctorate during its 55th convocation, where 12,895 students will graduate, including 168 with First Class honours.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya announced the details on Wednesday, saying honorary degrees would also go to High Chief Williams Agbo, Arc. Dr. Kaycee Kelechi Orji and Dr. William Franklyn Richardson for their contributions to national development. Two scholars, Prof. Peter-Jazzy Ezeh and Prof. Boniface Obinna Okere, will receive Professor Emeritus titles.
Of the graduands, 10,641 will receive first degrees and diplomas, while 2,944 will be awarded postgraduate qualifications, including 1,390 PhDs.
“This year’s convocation celebrates a harvest of 12,895 graduands. Of these, 10,641 will receive first degrees and diplomas, including 168 First Class honours graduates whose exceptional achievements testify to the enduring culture of academic excellence that defines this university,” Ortuanya said.
Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah is scheduled to deliver the convocation lecture on Thursday. The main ceremonies culminate on Saturday with the conferment of degrees and honours.
Ortuanya highlighted ongoing reforms at the institution, including infrastructure upgrades, expanded medical admissions and new academic programmes, as part of a broader renaissance drive. “Our ambition remains clear — to build a university that will not merely compete with the best in Africa but stand confidently among the world’s most respected institutions of higher learning,” he added.
