President Bola Tinubu has approved salary increases ranging from 30 to 80 percent for about 250,000 armed forces personnel, with the new rates taking effect from September 1.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced the decision in a statement on Tuesday, saying the increases are structured to give the largest percentage rises to the most junior ranks.
Officers above the rank of colonel — including brigadier-generals, major-generals, lieutenant-generals and generals — will receive a 30 percent increase. Personnel from colonel down to warrant officer will get 50 percent, while those from private to staff sergeant will receive 80 percent.
The adjustment will raise the annual salary bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to N924 billion, an increase of N264 billion.
Tinubu linked the measure to the sacrifices made by troops in the fight against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” he said.
He added that troop welfare and the modernisation of the armed forces would remain priorities.
“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties,” Tinubu said.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation.”
