The family of US actor Bruce Willis intends to contribute his brain to medical research upon his passing, aiming to bolster efforts against frontotemporal dementia, the ailment that forced the star’s exit from Hollywood in 2022.
Willis, 70, renowned for action-packed performances in films like “Die Hard” and “The Fifth Element,” first revealed a diagnosis of aphasia — a disorder impairing speech and comprehension — before it progressed to frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a less common form that impacts brain regions governing behavior, personality, and language skills.
The condition, which typically emerges earlier than Alzheimer’s and lacks robust therapies, has drawn heightened scrutiny thanks to Willis’ public struggle, according to health advocates.
In a family announcement, they explained the posthumous donation’s potential impact: “the brain donation would allow scientists to closely study the physical effects of frontotemporal dementia, helping researchers gain deeper insight into how the disease develops and progresses. Such studies are considered crucial in the search for more effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure.”
Emma Heming-Willis, the actor’s spouse, addressed the emotional weight of the choice, saying it was “one of the most emotionally challenging choices the family has faced, but emphasized its importance. She noted that turning their painful experience into something that could help others offered a sense of purpose and hope amid an otherwise difficult journey.”
