The arraignment of a Nnewi-based native doctor, Ikechukwu Ezenagu, popularly known as “Mmuo Mmili Afulu Anya,” was on Friday stalled at the Anambra State High Court, Awka, following his reported ill health.
Angel Network News (ANN) recalls that
Ezenagu was arrested on March 12, in Nnewi by operatives of Agunechemba led by the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, and is being prosecuted under the Anambra State Homeland Security Law.
Presiding Judge, Justice Jude Obiora, adjourned the matter to June 3, after the court held that the defendant was not medically fit to take his plea.
The defendant was brought to court amid a disagreement between the prosecution and defence teams over his health status.
The prosecution, led by the Anambra State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, insisted that the case should proceed.
However, defence counsel, Mr Kingsley Awuka, maintained that his client’s condition warranted medical attention before further proceedings.
Speaking with journalists after the sitting, Nweke said the state government remained prepared to continue with the prosecution of the case.
On his part, Awuka expressed optimism that the defendant would be fit to stand trial by the next adjourned date.
Although Nnewi community has written to Governor Soludo begging for the release of the native doctor attested that he is innocent of any criminal activities, noting that he is a good man who has contributed to the development of the community.
