Denmark Weighs Nationwide Ban On Muslim Call to Prayer

Denmark’s government is considering a nationwide prohibition on the public broadcast of the Islamic call to prayer, known as the Adhan, citing concerns over the “Islamisation” of Danish society.

Immigration Minister Morten Bodskov of the ruling Social Democrats confirmed the move, stating the new coalition government would examine the legal feasibility of such a ban.

“The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops,” Bodskov declared. “It has no place in Denmark, and you shouldn’t be in any doubt whether you’ve ended up in a suburb of Islamabad when you walk around Denmark.”

The proposal marks the third attempt by a Danish immigration minister to restrict the Adhan, following similar initiatives in 2020 and 2025. While some municipalities already limit amplified calls through local noise rules, the government is pushing for a uniform national policy.

Bodskov argued that the growing visibility of Islamic practices in public spaces demands a firm political response.

Legal experts have warned that a blanket ban could face challenges under Denmark’s constitution, which protects the right to public religious worship.

The measure aligns with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s administration, known for some of Europe’s strictest immigration policies, including “ghetto” laws and tight asylum rules.

The debate comes as Frederiksen leads a four-party coalition following a snap election earlier this year.
