Elumelu Takes Over as Seplat Energy Chairman, New CEO Named

Business tycoon Tony Elumelu has been appointed chairman of Seplat Energy Plc, effective January 1, 2027, as the oil and gas firm strengthens its leadership for future growth.

Elumelu, who chairs United Bank for Africa and Transnational Corporation of Nigeria, will succeed Udoma Udo Udoma, who is retiring at the end of December.

“The board believes this succession plan will support the company’s strategic vision as it executes the delivery of its 2030 plan and strives to accelerate the growth projects in its portfolio,” Seplat Energy said in a regulatory filing.

Elumelu joined the board in January after Heirs Energies acquired a 20.1 percent stake in the company for around $500 million.

“I am honoured to succeed Senator Udoma as chairman in January 2027 and to lead the board through Seplat Energy’s next phase of growth,” Elumelu said.

“I firmly believe in the critical role indigenous resources play in the economic transformation of Nigeria and Africa, and Seplat Energy’s culture of execution and governance aligns strongly with my own values,” he added.

In a separate move, the company named Effiong Okon as its new chief executive officer, effective August 1. Okon, who has over 35 years of industry experience, will replace Roger Brown, who is retiring on July 31.

Seplat Energy is dual-listed on the Nigerian and London stock exchanges.
