# Anambra State Government has issued a public notice directing all mortuary owners and operators across the state to ensure proper registration and renewal of their operating licenses in line with the Public Health Law of Anambra State.
Operators have been given until Friday, June 5, 2026, to complete their registration and renewal procedures, after which inspection and enforcement exercises will begin statewide.
The directive, issued through the Directorate of Medical Services on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, is part of the state government’s ongoing healthcare reform and regulatory drive under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
According to the notice, all mortuaries currently operating in the state but not registered with the Directorate of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, Awka, are required to immediately commence their registration process.
The statement was signed by Dr. Chukwulobelu Ugochukwu, Director of Medical Services Department, for the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Anambra State Ministry of Health.
The Ministry also instructed mortuary facilities with expired licenses or those due for renewal to update their registrations without delay.
Hospitals providing mortuary services were equally directed to register their mortuary units independently, regardless of the registration status of the hospital itself.
The government warned that the directive also applies to mortuary facilities operating illegally or without proper approval within the state.
# The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited, Engr. Okechukwu Okafor, alongside key regulators in the electricity sector, was
honoured with a Certificate of Appreciation as the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Southeast Region, convened a high-level stakeholders’ conversation on electricity regulations, billing transparency, and industrial productivity in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
The strategic engagement, held at the Old Government House, Awka, was organized by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), comprising the Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi State branches, in
collaboration with the Anambra State Government, the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC), the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), and the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), Anambra Chapter.
In her welcome address, the Chairman of MAN Southeast Region, Dr. Lady Ada Chukwudozie, lamented the severe impact of rising energy costs, poor electricity supply, and limited access to affordable financing on manufacturers and industries across the Southeast region and Nigeria at large.
Delivering the keynote address, former NERC Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, gave a historical overview of Nigeria’s electricity sector and the implications of the decentralization of the power sector under the Electricity Act.
In his goodwill message, the Chairman of EERC, Engr. Chijioke Okonkwo, emphasized the importance of continuous engagement between electricity regulators and manufacturers, pledging to replicate similar stakeholders’ conversations in Enugu State.
# The Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, has called on Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, to address what he described as denominational imbalance in political appointments in the state.
Bishop Ezeofor made the appeal while delivering his Presidential Charge during the Third Session of the Seventh Synod of the Diocese held at Ezira, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State with the theme “God’s great task for the Church: The great commitment: Raising a godly generation.”
The cleric alleged that recent appointments by the present administration appeared skewed in favour of the Catholic denomination, warning that such development could breed feelings of exclusion among other Christian groups in the state.
Ezeofor also appealed to the governor to check the excesses of operatives of Agunechemba security outfit under Operation Udo-Ga-Achi, alleging intimidation, extortion and forceful burial of deceased persons against the wishes of their families.
# Residents from Oyi local government area of Anambra state have appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo not to allow some overzealous politicians in the area subvert the wishes of the people in elections.
They made the call when they staged a peaceful protest against the outcome of the APGA primary elections conducted in Oyi state constituency.
Over one thousand protesters stormed the Government House in Awka where they submitted their position letter to the Deputy Chief of Staff to the governor, Doctor Vincent Okechi who received them.
The APGA faithful from Oyi, comprising youths and elders, protested to the governor, demanding the restoration of the mandate allegedly given to Hon. Innocent Ojike, which they said was stolen by enemies of the party.
They alleged that some individuals misinformed the governor about events that never occurred.
According to the protesters, the member representing Oyi LGA in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Innocent Ojike, alias Ojicam won the primary election, which was publicly declared to the hearing of everyone.
They said it was regrettable that, two days after the declaration, another person was announced the winner, which they described as ridiculous.
# Students and parents in Anambra State have called on the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo to investigate allegations of teacher absenteeism, selective class attendance, and misconduct in public junior and senior secondary schools.
They cautioned that such practices could undermine the state’s free and compulsory education policy.
The Anambra State government has implemented several education reforms, including the recruitment of qualified teachers, curriculum upgrades supported by digital learning resources, and initiatives to reduce financial burdens on families.
Despite these efforts, some students allege that certain teachers and school administrators are not meeting expected professional standards.
According to students interviewed by reporters within and around Awka, some teachers reportedly select which classes to teach and occasionally skip classes, particularly when they believe they have been reported for ineffective instruction. Allegations also include the imposition of harsh punishments, favoritism, and demands for money or materials purportedly for school projects.
There are claims that some teachers have encouraged inappropriate relationships among students.
# The Federal government has handed over the rehabilitated water pumping station in Ifite Ogwari, Anambra state to the state government to boost rice production.
During the event the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari who was represented by the National Programme Coordinator, Agricultural Transformation Agenda phase 1, Dr. Mohammed Arabi, called on farmers in the area to take ownership of the project to which is aimed at enhance rice production and ensure food security in the country.
The rehabilitation of the pumping station is yet another milestone in the effort of the federal government to transform agriculture in Nigeria from subsistence enterprise to modern , competitive and sustainable income generating sector.
The Minister disclosed that through the project, over 2,000 hectares of land would be available for all year round farming, bringing direct benefits to thousands of farmers and households in communities in the area.
# The Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Anglican Communion, Rt Rev Samuel Ezeofor, has accused Nigerian politicians of abandoning governance to focus prematurely on the 2027 general elections amid worsening insecurity and economic hardship in the country.
Ezeofor made the remark while delivering his Presidential Charge during the Synod of the Diocese held at Ezira in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The cleric lamented that political leaders were paying more attention to power retention and political calculations than addressing the pressing needs of Nigerians.
The Bishop regretted that the country was facing rising insecurity, corruption, economic deprivation and leadership failure, warning that governance was gradually taking the back seat to political maneuverings ahead of 2027.
According to him, the growing rate of political defections across parties was unhealthy for democracy and could push the country towards a one-party state.
# Awka Magistrate Court in Anambra State has warned a businessman, Mr. Ikenna Ezeume, to stop making alleged defamatory statements online against former Chairman Emeritus of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Aniocha Branch, Barrister Jideofor Okongwu, or risk a N5 million fine and possible imprisonment.
The warning was issued by Chief Magistrate C.O. Ezekwere during proceedings at Magistrate Court 1 in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area.
Mr. Ezeume, aged 40, is currently facing trial over allegations of cyberbullying and defamation in a case filed as Inspector General of Police v. Ikenna Ezeume, marked MAN/336/C/2025.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with one surety in like sum.
According to the charge sheet, Ezeume allegedly published statements on the internet and WhatsApp between March and April 2025 accusing Barrister Okongwu of using forged WAEC and law certificates to practice law. Prosecutors claimed the publication was false and capable of damaging the lawyer’s reputation and career.
# The Awka-Etiti Renaissance Forum (ARF) has expressed profound grief over the death of prominent businessman, philanthropist, and community leader, Chief Lucky Chinedu Godwin Adimike, describing his passing as a monumental loss to Awka-Etiti and humanity at large.
In an official statement, the Forum said it received the news of the death of Chief Adimike, a member of its Governing Council, with “profound shock and deep sorrow,” extolling his enduring legacy of philanthropy, compassion, and service to humanity.
According to the statement jointly signed by members of the Forum’s leadership, Chief Adimike was widely known for his unwavering commitment to community development, educational advancement, healthcare support, and humanitarian interventions targeted at vulnerable members of society.
The Forum noted that the late philanthropist’s generosity touched countless lives within Awka-Etiti and beyond, especially through his support for widows, orphans, struggling families, and community empowerment initiatives. It further described him as “a pillar of hope and progress,” whose humanitarian efforts were driven not by public acclaim but by a deep sense of duty to humanity.
