Lagos, Kano and Kaduna have the highest numbers of registered voters ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission said on Tuesday.
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan disclosed the figures at a stakeholders’ meeting and press conference in Abuja while updating the national voters’ register.
“The top 10 states by number of registered voters are Lagos State in first position with 7,488,633 registered voters; followed by Kano State with 6,570,276. Next is Kaduna State with 4,662,640 voters. Next is Katsina State with 3,876,051,” Amupitan said.
The “KKK” states refer to Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina. Located in the northwestern region, these three states are known as a powerful voting block due to their historically high voter turnout and large populations.
He listed Rivers in fifth place with 3,736,434 registered voters, followed by Oyo with 3,588,111 and Delta with 3,525,988. Benue recorded 3,057,225, Ogun 3,037,981 and Bauchi 3,012,547.
The total number of registered voters stood at 103,428,715. Male voters numbered 53,528,218, or 51.75 per cent, while female voters totalled 49,900,497, or 48.25 per cent.
Voters aged 35 to 49 formed the largest group at 43,265,946, representing 41.83 per cent of the register. Those aged 18 to 34 numbered 29,777,576 (28.79 per cent), while the 50-to-69 age group accounted for 22,982,900 (22.22 per cent). Voters aged 70 and above made up 7,402,291, or 7.16 per cent.
The commission recorded 232,658 persons with disabilities across 10 categories, about 0.23 per cent of the total.
A three-phase continuous voter registration exercise produced 10,772,421 new registrations before biometric verification and clean-up. Nationwide collection of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards is scheduled to begin on October 9.
In line with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, the register will be displayed for public scrutiny from October 9 to 15. “The register of voters will be displayed for public scrutiny from the 9th to 15th of October 2026, not later than 90 days before the general election,” Amupitan said.
Ekiti had the lowest number of registered voters at 1,055,708, followed by Bayelsa with 1,200,691.
